Background of the Study
The intersection between gender and poverty presents complex challenges in Ede South Local Government Area, Osun State. Women disproportionately bear the brunt of poverty due to systemic inequalities in access to education, employment, and healthcare (Balogun, 2023). Socio-cultural factors, such as traditional gender roles and discriminatory practices, exacerbate economic vulnerabilities among women. Poverty not only limits access to resources but also reinforces gender disparities by confining women to low-paying, informal sectors of the economy. Recent studies have highlighted that poverty among women is both a cause and consequence of gender inequality, creating a cyclical pattern that is difficult to break (Okeke, 2024). This study investigates the multifaceted relationship between gender and poverty, analyzing how socio-economic policies and cultural practices intersect to perpetuate these challenges. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research explores both quantitative data and qualitative narratives to provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play. The findings aim to inform targeted interventions that address the dual burden of poverty and gender inequality, thereby promoting sustainable development in the region (Udo, 2025). This investigation is critical for guiding policy reforms and social programs that seek to empower women and alleviate poverty.
Statement of the Problem
In Ede South, the dual challenges of gender inequality and poverty create a cycle of deprivation that disproportionately affects women. Systemic barriers, discriminatory practices, and limited economic opportunities contribute to high poverty rates among women, further entrenching gender disparities. The lack of targeted policies and interventions exacerbates these issues, hindering efforts to promote economic empowerment and social equity. Despite recognition of the problem at a broader level, there is insufficient localized research that examines the specific interplay between gender and poverty in this area. Thus, an in-depth investigation is needed to address these challenges (Akinola, 2023). Further inquiry is absolutely required for clarity.

Gender discrimination is a significant determinant of economic deprivation among women.
Policy interventions targeted at gender equality will reduce poverty levels.
Significance of the Study
This study provides important insights into the complex relationship between gender and poverty, offering a basis for targeted policy reforms. Its findings will assist local authorities and development agencies in designing effective interventions to empower women and alleviate poverty. The research contributes to the broader discourse on gender equality and sustainable development in Ede South (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, it lays a foundation for future studies on poverty reduction strategies.
